5 Questions to Ask Any China Freight Forwarder Before You Ship
By Alice Wu, CEO & Founder Published · Last updated
Short answer
Before your first shipment, ask a China freight forwarder: can I see your real facility, will I have the same named contact, what happens if a shipment is rejected, what does the quote include and what could add cost, and can you speak to my product category? Vague answers are the warning sign.
Why Vetting Matters More Than Price
The cheapest quote is rarely the deciding factor that goes wrong — it’s usually a vendor that overpromises on capability, underdelivers on communication, or disappears when something goes wrong mid-shipment. These five questions are designed to surface that before you’ve committed money, not after.
1. “Can I see your actual facility, not just stock photos?”
Any legitimate operation should be able to show you a real video walkthrough or recent photos of the floor where your goods will actually be handled. If a vendor can only offer generic warehouse stock imagery or refuses a video call, that’s a signal worth taking seriously.
2. “Who will I actually be talking to, and is it the same person each time?”
A support-ticket queue where you get a different handler every message makes it hard to build context or accountability. Ask whether you’ll have a named contact, and test it — message them something specific and see whether the response shows they actually read it.
3. “What happens if my shipment gets rejected or flagged at the destination?”
This question reveals whether the vendor has actually dealt with real-world problems or is only describing the ideal-case process. A vendor with real experience will have a specific answer — how they catch issues before shipping, and what the remediation process looks like if something still goes wrong.
4. “What’s included in this quote, and what could add cost later?”
Vague quotes that later reveal additional fees for documentation, storage, or customs handling are one of the most common complaints importers have. Ask for the full breakdown up front — commercial invoice prep, packing list, the shipping document, and any destination-side charges that aren’t in the vendor’s control.
5. “Can you handle my specific product category, or is this generic?”
Battery-containing products, apparel, food-adjacent goods, and anything with compliance requirements need a vendor who can speak specifically to your category — not just general reassurance. Ask a pointed question about your actual product and see how specific the answer is.

What We’d Say If You Asked Us These Questions
- Facility: we’ll do a video call before your first shipment, no problem — see our verification page for what else you can check.
- Contact: you’ll be talking to Alice, Lisa, or Linda directly on WhatsApp, not a rotating support queue.
- Problems: see our FNSKU compliance checklist and fragile product packaging guide for how we actually prevent the most common rejection causes.
- Quote breakdown: see how freight costs are actually calculated and how our pricing works.
- Category-specific: see the product categories we work with, or tell us your product and we’ll give you a specific answer, not a generic one.
