Walmart WFS vs Amazon FBA Prep: Can One China Warehouse Handle Both?

By , CEO & Founder Published · Last updated

Short answer

Yes. Receiving, inspection, labeling, poly bagging and palletizing are the same physical work for both channels, so one China prep facility can serve Walmart WFS and Amazon FBA. What changes is the label format (GTIN-based for WFS, FNSKU for Amazon), carton and pallet specs, and some poly bag thresholds.

The Short Answer

Yes, the same facility can handle both, because the underlying work overlaps heavily: receiving, inspection, labeling, poly bagging, and palletizing are the same physical steps regardless of which marketplace the inventory is headed to. What changes is the label format and a handful of packaging specifics per channel.

Where Walmart WFS Prep Differs From Amazon FBA

  • Labeling format: WFS uses its own GTIN-based labeling rather than Amazon’s FNSKU system — the barcode content and placement rules are different, not just cosmetically but in what the label needs to encode. Both formats can be produced through our label printing service.
  • Carton requirements: Walmart’s carton labeling and pallet configuration specs differ from Amazon’s in ways that matter at receiving — getting this wrong causes the same kind of rejection risk as an Amazon labeling error.
  • Polybagging rules: broadly similar safety-driven requirements (suffocation warnings on large openings) but confirm current WFS-specific thresholds before assuming Amazon’s rules apply identically.

What Doesn’t Change

  • Quality inspection tiers (receiving check, sampling, full inspection) apply the same way regardless of destination channel.
  • Custom packaging and structural protection needs are about the product, not the marketplace — a fragile item needs the same protective packaging whether it’s headed to an Amazon or Walmart fulfillment center.
  • Consolidation and freight booking logic is the same: multi-supplier inventory gets consolidated into one outbound shipment either way.

Why Sellers Are Asking About This Now

More sellers are deliberately diversifying beyond Amazon-only FBA, partly to reduce single-channel risk and partly because Walmart’s marketplace has grown enough to be worth the operational overhead. Setting up a second, separate prep relationship just for WFS is often more hassle than it’s worth when the same facility can handle both with per-channel labeling tracked per order.

Keeping Channels Straight

The practical risk in multi-channel prep isn’t technical difficulty, it’s mixing up which label format goes on which carton when both Amazon and Walmart shipments are moving through the same facility in the same week. That’s a process and tracking discipline question, not a capability question.
