What Is an FBA Prep Center, and Do You Need One in China?

By , CEO & Founder Published

Short answer

An FBA prep center is a third-party warehouse that receives your inventory, inspects it, labels, bags or bundles units, packs cartons to Amazon's rules and ships them to FBA. Since Amazon ended its US prep and labeling services in 2026, units must arrive already prepped.

An FBA prep center is a third-party warehouse that gets your inventory ready for Amazon’s fulfillment centers. It receives goods from your supplier, inspects them, applies FNSKU labels, poly bags or bundles units where needed, packs them into cartons that meet Amazon’s requirements, and ships them to FBA. Prep centers exist because Amazon has strict rules on how units and cartons must arrive, and from January 1, 2026, Amazon no longer offers its own prep and labeling services for US FBA inbound shipments. Units now have to arrive already prepped.

Whether you need one, and where it should be, depends on your volume, your supplier and how much control you want before goods leave the factory.

What an FBA Prep Center Does

Most prep centers offer a similar set of core tasks:

  • Receiving. Counting cartons and units against your purchase order or shipment plan.
  • Inspection. Checking for damage, defects, wrong variants or missing parts. This can range from a visual check to AQL sampling or 100% inspection.
  • Labeling. Applying FNSKU labels to each unit, and Transparency codes where your brand is enrolled.
  • Poly bagging. Bagging units that need it, with suffocation warnings where the bag opening meets Amazon’s size threshold.
  • Bundling and kitting. Combining items into sets sold as one unit, with “sold as set” labeling where required.
  • Boxing. Packing units into cartons that meet Amazon’s size and weight limits.
  • Carton labeling. Applying FBA carton labels that match each carton’s contents.
  • Shipping to FBA. Booking freight and sending the cartons to the assigned fulfillment centers.

Why Amazon’s 2026 Change Matters

Before 2026, sellers could send some unprepped or unlabeled inventory to Amazon US and pay Amazon to prep it on arrival. From January 1, 2026, that option ended for US FBA inbound. Units must arrive labeled and prepped to Amazon’s requirements.

This puts the responsibility back on the seller, the supplier or a prep center. For details on what changed, see our post on Amazon ending FBA prep and labeling services. Check Seller Central for the current requirements that apply to your shipments.

China-Based vs Destination-Based Prep

Prep can happen at origin, near the factory, or at the destination, near Amazon’s warehouses. Both work. The right choice depends on your product and supply chain.

FactorChina-based prep centerDestination-based prep center
Where goods are preppedNear the supplier, before exportIn the destination country, after import
When problems are foundBefore goods are shipped overseasAfter goods have already crossed the ocean
Fixing defects or shortagesSupplier is nearby, easier to resolveSupplier is far away, harder to resolve
Freight flowGoods can ship directly to FBAGoods ship to prep center, then to FBA
Labor costsOften lowerOften higher
Time zone and communicationDifferent from US or EU sellersUsually same as the seller’s market
Restocking flexibilityShips in larger planned batchesCan hold stock and send smaller replenishments
Best suited forGoods made in China going straight to FBAGoods from many countries, or frequent small replenishments

Some sellers use both: prep and inspection in China, then a destination warehouse to hold overflow stock and replenish FBA as needed.

When a Prep Center Makes Sense

A prep center is worth considering if:

  • Your supplier cannot or will not label and pack to Amazon’s requirements.
  • You buy from several suppliers and need goods combined into one shipment.
  • You need inspection before goods ship, not after they arrive.
  • Your products need bundling, kitting or poly bagging.
  • You have had shipments delayed or rejected because of labeling or packing issues.

If you sell a single simple product and your supplier is reliable at FNSKU labeling and carton packing, you may not need one. Many sellers start with the supplier doing prep and move to a prep center once they add products or suppliers.

What to Ask a Prep Center

Before you choose a prep center, ask specific questions. The answers tell you how they work, not just what they offer.

  1. What happens on receiving? Do they count every carton and unit and report discrepancies against your PO?
  2. What inspection options do they offer? Visual check, AQL sampling, 100% inspection? What does the report include?
  3. How do they check labels? Do they verify barcodes by scanning, and match them to your SKU list?
  4. How do they handle Transparency codes? Can they apply unit-level codes and track that each is used once?
  5. Can they make or source cartons that fit Amazon’s size and weight limits?
  6. What freight options do they offer to FBA, and under which Incoterms?
  7. How do they communicate problems? Photos, written reports, response time?
  8. How is storage charged if goods wait for a shipment?
  9. Can they handle bundles, kits and multi-SKU orders?
  10. What do they need from you to start: FNSKU list, label files, prep instructions?

Avoid prep centers that cannot clearly explain their receiving and checking process. Ask for sample photos and reports if available.

FAQ

What is an FBA prep center in simple terms?

It is a warehouse that prepares your inventory for Amazon by receiving, inspecting, labeling, bagging and packing it, then shipping it to Amazon’s fulfillment centers.

Does Amazon still prep products for sellers?

For US FBA inbound shipments, Amazon ended its own prep and labeling services from January 1, 2026. Units must arrive prepped. Check Seller Central for current rules in other marketplaces.

Is a China prep center better than a US prep center?

Neither is better in all cases. China prep lets you find problems before goods ship and work with the supplier directly. US prep can suit sellers who replenish in small batches or source from several countries.

Can my supplier do FBA prep instead?

Some suppliers can, but quality varies. If you use your supplier, give clear labeling and packing instructions and check the work before goods ship.

Prep in Shenzhen

We run Amazon FBA prep from our warehouse in Longhua, Shenzhen, including receiving checks, inspection, poly bagging, kitting and carton packing. Unit and carton labels are printed in-house and checked by scanning; see FNSKU labeling for details.
